After making everything snug, by stoppingthe wind out at one place with branches, at another witha wet coat, and at a third with my saddle-cloth, I sat down,enjoyed my usual refreshment, and listened to the roaringof the wind with a degree of satisfaction that can muchmore easily be imagined than described. The horses werepicketed close to the encampment, as both the hunterand the Kalmucks thought the bears might pay us a visit,and leave us minus a steed in the mornino;. EFFECT OF MIST. 395 endeavoured to give the effect under wliicli I have seen itjust at dawn of day, when I have been out in search ofthe alain, or large stag. The opposite view will give anidea of this wild country. After sketching the lake I continued my course, crossinganother very high ridge, on which we found new snow upto tlie knees of our horses. Clouds were still hangingon the high summits to the southward; now and thenfloating masses rolled up the mountain-sides, and exposedfor a few minutes the wild and rugged scenery which layhid under that misty veil. In short, the mountains becamecoquettish ; at one moment the misty shroud was liftedsufficiently high to show all the beauties that peeped fromthe skirts of the hills, and then the fleecy garments weredropped with such a modest grace, that fancy picturedinnumerable hidden charms. After watching for severalminutes with intense interest these curious effects, a gentlebreeze wafted the misty veil from the forms it had con-cealed,
