The oppo-site view will give an idea of this singular scene,—thetumulus has been thrown up by a people of whom we haveno trace ; and in this part of Asia such ancient works arenumerous. Many of the rocks in this valley are a deep red jasper:and one mountain, a little to the north, possesses a brightcrimson colour, which, when seen lit up by the setting sun,lins a l)rilliaiit eflect. Early in the morning we began ourridt to the south, crossing low ridges, which extended fardown towards the ))lain. High conical tombs, of sun-burntbricks, were erected over their ashes, and once every yearthe Sultan and his tribe visit this spot, remaining eight orten days.
