| Description |
English: Originally built as the Cathedral High School, this prominent corner building is located at the very epicentre of British Bombay, at the junction of commercial Hornby Road and administrative Esplanade Road and faces Flora Fountain. The building was acquired by the Oriental Life Insurance Company and remodelled in 1898 under the supervision of prolific designer FW Stevens into a multi-turreted Gothic fantasy.
At a time when British insurance companies were reluctant to insure the lives of Britons living in India and the colonies (due to the high rates of mortality), the Oriental Life Insurance Company was established in Calcutta in 1818 by Bipin Behari Dasgupta and others; it was the first corporate entity in India offering life insurance coverage and Europeans in India were its primary target market. It also accepted Indians as clients but charged Indians heftier premiums. |
