Summary
[edit]DescriptionOrdnance Factory housing - geograph.org.uk - 1053039.jpg |
English: Ordnance Factory housing Houses were built for key workers brought to Kirkby Ordnance Factory in 1938/9. There were two designs - those with sloping roofs, such as these on Spinney Close, right beside the factory, and those with flat roofs, such as those on the 'Park Estate' by Kirkby Station, where I was born. Both types have been heavily disguised in the intervening years, after passing from the Ministry to the Local Authority, and then passing into private hands under 'right-to-buy'. Given the danger of explosions at the Factory I have always found it surprising family homes were built so close - the siting of the other houses two miles or so away seems more sensible. |
