Notes | Wooden boards. 2 clasps. Macchi states; Wittenberg?, bound by H.H. binder as the Saint Burchard with fleur de lis escutcheon panel-stamp suggests (K. Haebler, Rollen-und Plattenstempel, p. 182, H.H., Platten A. bezeichnet, VII 88x60 mm., Sanc. Burch/Harti Episc/Op Wircburg). Considering the number of rolls and panel-stamps provided with H.H. cyphers, they were probably used in several workshops. These tools were mostly owned by bookbinders active in Wittenberg or in its neighbourhood, even if some examples perhaps refer to Hans Hermann active in Nürnberg. Bevelled boards were probably fashionable at the time and did not represent a functional necessity. There are two plates showing St. Kilian (front cover) and St. Burkard (back cover). These two plates were used by the binder Hans Herolt in Wuerzburg ca. 1572 - 1609. | |||
