English: Orchard Grove, Orpington This photo was intended to be part of my series in TQ4566 (see https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=1905481 ), but it proved to be just outside the square!
Orchard Grove is a cut through from Station Road to Knoll Rise. Although these houses are relatively modern, and back onto three similar houses in Knoll Rise, the bend in the foreground is original see the 1940 1 inch map at http://www.npemap.org.uk/tiles/map.html#546,166,1. Presumably the houses here were built on the site of one of the original houses in Knoll Rise, first developed in the early part of the 20th Century, whose garden may well have backed onto this part of Orchard Grove. This would then explain why the kink in the road was put here in the first place. |
