[edit]DescriptionOrbitals Lockheed L1011 mothership, "Stargazer" (4332166792).jpg |
They call this pretty airplane the, "Stargazer", an "L-1011 Carrier Aircraft" www.orbital.com/SpaceLaunch/L1011/index.shtml It forms the first, air-breathing, stage of the Pegasus small satellite launch system: www.orbital.com/SpaceLaunch/Pegasus/ Flying at 40,000 feet over the ocean, it drops the winged, Pegasus XL with 3 rocket stages, and the payload, up to 1000lb, reaches low earth orbit (LEO) in about 10 minutes. This is the first purely commercial launch technology to be developed and differs markedly from conventional and more expensive approaches. The rocket powered vehicle isn't released unless it and the payload are, "Go" in the cold, low pressure environment at 40,000 feet, with 80% of the Earth's atmosphere already below (2.7lb/in^2). They haven't had a launch failure since 1996. Any number of space shuttle and space shuttle replacement studies suggested using an air breathing first stage, but only Orbital Sciences has ever built actual hardware and done it. 102-0279_IMG |
