Summary

[edit]
Description

Orbicular granodiorite from the Precambrian of West Australia. (~8.2 centimeters across along the base)

Orbicular igneous rocks have large, polymineralic, somewhat spherical masses called "orbs" or "orbicles". In this case, the rock is an orbicular granodiorite. The matrix around the orbs is granodioritic and composed of potassium feldspar, plagioclase feldspar, quartz, and one or more mafic minerals. The orbs themselves are composed of plagioclase feldspar, hornblende amphibole, biotite mica, and magnetite.

Orbicular rocks are also known as "orbiculite"

Age: mid-Neoarchean, 2.687 Ga

Locality: quarry in the vicinity of Warroan Hill, a little west of Boogardie, west of Mt. Magnet & east-northeast of Geraldton, in the western part of Western Australia
