Summary
[edit]DescriptionOpticks Circle of Least Confusion.jpg |
English: In Opticks, Book 1, Part 1, Proposition 7 Newton considers attempts to improve the clarity of images through a refracting telescope. Although he correctly proves that the problem is due to the different refractive indexes or ‘refrangibilities’ of the colours, he gives a formula for the diameter of the image of an object illuminated my monochromatic light from a spherical lens ‘in the Place where the Image of the Object is most distinctly made’ (also described as the ‘Circle of Least Confusion’). His derivation of the formula is from his Lucasian Lectures and can be found in ‘The Mathematical Papers of Isaac Newton’, by D. T. Whiteside, Cambridge University Press, 1967-1981, Vol. III, page 482.
