Description |
English: Ophicleide, brass, eleven keyed, mouthpiece probably a baritone 1 ophicleide in Bb Gautrot Ainé, Paris, France, circa 1875 brass, eleven keys, overall length 1125 mm stamped ‘Gautrot Breveté - A PARIS - G(anchor)A’ 1998.60.100 Castle 164 (presented George 1960) The ophicleide was the bass member of the keyed brass instrument family, and could be considered a modern version of the serpent. Patented in 1821 and barely surviving into the 20th century, it is now replaced in bands and orchestras by the tuba. It has been used in the orchestra at times by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Verdi and Wagner. |
