He says thatwhen the swelling is recent, small, and compressible, and disappearsupon arresting the circulation, the artery should be cut down uponand tied, both above and below the opening. He has been obligedto resort to this in cases where the humeral artery had been tied. The operation is performed in the following manner: An incisionabout three inches in length, following the course of the vessel, ismade into the sac. The circulation is commanded by an assistant,who presses with his fingers upon the brachial artery. The open-ing in the vessel is seen when the cavity is sponged out. A probeis passed upward into the opening, and a little dissection of thesheath and venas comites will enable the surgeon to pass a ligatureunder the vessel, where its connections are undisturbed.
