dto the requisite extent with the scissors, but most cautiously, for fearthat, by dividing it too freely, the eye may be made to protrudefrom the socket, or turn in the opposite direction. Strabismus Divergens sometimes takes place after section ofthe internal rectus. If the eye does not eventually become right, the external rectus must be divided. This is performed in thesame manner, essentially, as that of the internal rectus, it being re-membered that the insertion of the tendon of the external rectus isusually a quarter of an inch from the margin of the cornea, and isthinner and more spread out than that of the internal. Section of the superior rectus may sometimes be required. It isto be remembered that the insertion of its inner fibres is near themargin of the cornea, but the average distance is about a quar-ter of an inch. When a return of the strabismus takes place, the operation maybe repeated. Sometimes success has been obtained only after asecond or third repetition. PL. 167
