nclosed within its own proper capsule and is made upof two lateral lobes and a middle portion or, as it is sometimes called,a ^middle lobe. The two lateral lobes are symmetrical and separatedbehind, at the base, by the interlobular notch, at which point theejaculatory ducts penetrate the organ. The middle portion or middlelobe corresponds to that part of the base of the gland that joins thetwo lateral lobes across the middle line. It is usually represented 694 URINARY SYSTEM. by a small, rounded prominence that presents into the base of thebladder immediately behind the internal urethral orifice. This isthe portion of the prostate which is most likely to become affected inhypertrophy of the gland. It presents as a prominent rounded mass intothe bladder, posterior to the urethral orifice; or may become partlyseparated from the principal prostatic mass and, without being muchincreased in size, may interfere with micturition by blocking theinternal urethral orifice, ^Tdall-valve fashion.

The prostatic portion is the widest and most dilatable portionof the urethral canal. It penetrates the entire length of the glandfrom base to apex, and is situated nearer the upper than the lowersurface. The prostatic urethra is about one and one-quarter inchlong and is made up of mucous membrane and an underlying layerof connective tissue which contains unstriped muscular fibers andelastic tissue.
