Text Appearing Before Image:
he kidneythe return flow into and out of the bladderis noticed at an interval of from fifteen toseventy five seconds. The end of the cathe-ter is placed in a sterilized test tube to col-lect the escaping urine. If the tube is leftin after the patient is put to bed, it is bestheld in an auger hole bored at an angle ina block of wood, as shown in Fig. 281. Fig. 280.—Washing Out the Pelvis of the Kidneyby Continuous Irrigation. The renal catheter has been inserted up to the kid-ney (outlined through the body) and then connectedwith a funnel containing the irrigating solution. Anordinary glass catheter inserted into the bladder drainsit by a short rubber tube into a bowl. Upon elevatingthe funnel, the solution runs out of the end of the renalcatheter and circulates in the pelvis of the kidney, whichit distends, and then escapes freely down the ureter, beside the catheter, into the bladder, and so out throughthe vesical catheter into the bowl. The arrows indi-cate the course of the fluid.
Text Appearing After Image:
CATHETERIZATION. 495 When the short metal catheter with a piece of rubber tubing on the end isinserted into the ureter for the purpose of collecting the urine of one side, it isbest to drop a small quantity of a concentrated aniline solution into the bladderso as to have positive evidence that the clear fluid escaping by the catheter isnot contaminated by the fluid in the bladder and that the catheter remains inplace in the ureter.
