During the drying processthe beaker glass is covered with a sheet of pasteboard, through which a centi-grade thermometer is thrust, so that the mercury bulb may be suspended about midway in the vessel. Inthis way the temperaturecan be perfectly regulated.A Bunsen burner is placedunder the sand bath and thetemperature in the beakerglass is slowly brought up to80° C, where it is held forone hour to dry the catgut.A higher temperature than100° C, before the catgutis thoroughly dry, rendersit brittle; this step in themethod must be carried outmost carefully. When thedrying process is completedthe cumol is poured into thebeaker glass and brought upto a temperature of 165° C,a little short of the boil-ing point, with two Bunsenburners. A copper-wire net-ting should be placed overthe beaker glass to preventthe ignition of the cumol. This temperature is morethan sufficient to kill allmicro-organisms, and it isnot desirable to allow thecumol to boil, as boiling

Cumol, which is of a clear, limpid, slightly yellowish appearance whenprocured from the chemist, is changed to a brownish color by boiling. The catgut is allowed to remain in the sand bath until the excess of cumol PREPARATION OF CATGUT. 17 is driven off and it appears entirely free from any oily matter. A period ofone to two hours is usually sufficient to dry it thoroughly.
