Relief Valve is piped to discharge the surplus steamthrough the roof of the cab. The locomotive shownin Figure 23 has air pump and Economy Car HeatingApparatus on the left hand side, with the three-way cockforward of and close to the air pump, and the exhaustpipe leading to the reservoir fitted with asbestos covering. When the Economy Car Heating System was first in-troduced, an ordinary open pop valve located outside,on top of the locomotive cab, was used as a relief valveto vent the surplus pressure from the train heating sys-tem. Experience demonstrated that an adjustable reliefvalve, conveniently located for operation by the engineerinside the cab, was both desirable and necessary to en-able him to vary the steam pressure to suit trains ofdifferent lengths. A steam pressure of 20 pounds wouldbe ample to heat a train of twa or three cars,
