The heat of the escaping condensation has, in othersystems, been used to automatically operate some formof a trap or discharge valve located in the outlet orthe lowest part of the heating pipes, which has resultedin carrying about the same pressure in the radiatingpipes inside the cars as was carried in the train pipelocated underneath the cars. In the vapor system train pipe pressure only reachesthe inlet of the radiating system, as shown in the com-parison of systems in Plate VI, but in the case of thesteam pressure system train pipe pressure goes throughthe entire radiating system to the outlet. This methodof carrying train pipe pressure in the heating pipes in-side the car has frequently resulted in the cars beingover-heated, because of the high train pipe pressure neces-sary. The trap or valve which has been placed at theoutlet has, it is claimed, caused more or less backing HEATING AND LIGHTING CARS 107 .**■?* %
