Description: Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee and an American nurse observe a leg amputation in Hiroshima Reserve Hospital during the Russo-Japanese War. Photograph by Herbert Ponting. (Dr. McGee is the woman second from the right.)

Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee was am American physician and and the only female Acting Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Army. She was placed in charge of all the nurses under the Army Surgeon General's Department. In 1904, during the Russo-Japanese War, Dr. McGee led a group of nurses to Japan to aid in military hospitals, which is when this photo was taken. McGee is buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.

The Russo-Japanese War was a conflict from 1904-1905 over expanding empires in Manchuria and Korea.
