Summary
[edit]DescriptionOpalite with purple opal (Jalisco State, Mexico) 2.jpg |
English: Opalite is an opal-dominated rock. "Opal" is a mineral / mineraloid name for amorphous hydrous silica (SiO2·nH2O). “Opalite” is a rock name. Opalites form principally by alteration of volcanic rock or alteration of siliceous sinter, a type of hot spring deposit. They are often described as impure opal rocks - they lack the famous “fire” and rainbow colors of gem-grade opal. Opalite is fairly hard, usually has vitreous luster, and breaks with conchoidal fracture, resulting in sharp broken edges.
This opalite sample has a striking band of purple opal. The coloration has been attributed to fluorite inclusions. Portions of the rock glow greenish under ultraviolet light, indicating the presence of uranium. The specimen is slightly radioactive. Locality: unrecorded / undisclosed site in Jalisco State, Mexico (supposedly from between the towns of Magdalena & Tequila) |
