Nederlands: De Japanner Ookawa Kitaroo was één van 15 Japanse mannen die in 1863 in Nederland voet aan wal zette. Het doel van hun verblijf was zich te bekwamen in hun beroep en zo de ontwikkeling van Japan tot een moderne staat vooruit te helpen. Hij was een smid die zich richtte op de bouw van marineschepen. Hij overleed na een kortstondige ziekte op 21 september 1865 in een huis op de Nieuwmarkt. Langs de hoofdlaan van begraafplaats De Nieuwe Ooster staat een grafmonument voor hem. |
