When Champlain, in 161.3, ascended the Ottawa to Allumet Island, he was toldby his Algonquin allies of a tribe of their nation, whose hunting grounds werearound a lake west of the Algonquin River. The tribe was called Nipisirinien orLittle Water People. This is the first mention in Canadian history of the Xipis-sings. or Xipisingues, as written by Frontenac. Jean Xicolet, explorer and interpreter, on the advice of Champlain. left theAlgonquins of the Ottawa, and, in 1620. became an adopted member of the Xipis-sings. with wliom lie remained for nearly nine years.
