s decomposed -by acids, and was found to be essentially a hydrated silicate ofnickel. Analysis of one specimen dried at 212 P. gave oxide of nickel 30.40 percent.; another dried at a higher temperature yielded oxide of nickel 32.20 percent., and contained besides traces of cobalt and copper, being identical with nickel-gymnite or genthite. A third specimen, which contained small grains of thenative metals disseminated, gave silver 2.55 per cent., copper 18.51 per cent., andoxide of nickel 20.85 per cent. But the discoveries at the Wallace mine and on Michipicoten island, whilesignificant as showing the presence of nickel, have so far not been shown to be ofconsiderable extent or of commercial value. Large industries cannot be built upon mineral occurrences barely sufficient in size to provide cabinet specimens. Thereal nickel field of Ontario is the Sudbury district, and the story of the discoveryof nickel ore there is interesting. P. 91 1917 Historical Sketch of Nickel Discoveries 27

Starting at a point on the Sturgeon river nearits entrance into lake Xipissing, Salter ran a base line westward. On arriving atWhitefish lake he surveyed a meridian line due north twelve miles, which wascontinued the following year eighteen miles farther. In his report Salter remarkstliat the character of the country on the meridian line closely resembled that ofthe last section of the base line from the Wanapitei river to Whitefish lake, exceptthat the valleys were broader and the soil generally lighter in character.
