Text Appearing Before Image:
st fall, the City Council wasinduced to plough up a number of vacant lots and lot owners were asked, throughthe medium of the press, to forward to the committee a list of any vacant lotswhich could be used for gardening purposes. In some cases owners of suitablelots residing out of the city were communicated with and permission obtained towse same. The original scheme was considerably enlarged upon in the spring ofthis year owing to a number of unemployed desiring this means of raising vege*-tables for their own use. The object was to beautify the city by cultivating vacantlots, more especially those situated between or close to residential or businessbuildings. A committee of six, including the Mayor and City Clerk, was appointedto organize the scheme which was formed into a Vacant Lot Gardening Assoc-iation and placed under the supervision of Mr. Paddington of the City Hall, whotook a great interest in the work and to whom most of the credit is due for thesuccess of the Association.
Text Appearing After Image:
