uce Mines, thence easterly nine miles to Thessalon; thence easterlyto Blind River, distant eighty-three miles from Sault Ste. Marie. Of the distance hetween these two points, thirty-five miles of road was ditchedand graded, of which ten miles has heen macadamized and % of a mile surfacedwith rocmac and thirteen miles surfaced with gravel. This road, after leaving the town of Sault Ste. Marie, passes through theGarden River Indian Reserve, the townships of Tarbutt and Tarbutt Additional,Johnson, Plumraer and Plummer Additional, Lefroy, Thessalon, Bright and BrightAdditional, Thompson and part of Cobden. past the villages of Garden River,Echo Bay, Bar River, Desbarats, Portlock, Bruce Mines, Thessalon and Blind River.It follows in most instances the old colonization roads constructed at different times.The road is well selected where it would serve the greatest number of people, takinginto consideration the character of the country to be passed through. In places the country is broken and rocky. Tributary to thisroad on the north are to be found areas of good land well cultivated. Large clear-ings and fine buildings are to be met with everywhere. Owing to the unsatisfactory condition of the roads heretofore, it has beendifficult and at periods almost impossible for the settlers to reach good marketsat Sault Ste. Marie or other smaller towns along the railway. The road as nowconstructed will allow the settlers as far as Blind River, about eighty miles eastof Sault Ste. Marie, to reach that point. It will also give them access to all thestations along the Canadian Pacific Railway. Part of the road only has been surfaced with gravel or stone and it will takeanother season to finish the road to Blind )(iver. Several culverts and small bridgesare required to be built. The
