f grain fromFrance, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Russia, England, Scotland, Hungary, Greece, Austria,Egypt, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, and the United States. These havebeen grown under the same conditions as those secured throughout the Dominion ofCanada. Most of these varieties have now been carefully tested in the Experimentaldepartment for several years in suscession. All varieties are grown for a period of atleast five years, unless they show themselves very inferior within a shorter time. Theones which give the most satisfactory results are continued for a much longer period. Infact, a considerable number have now been grown for ten years in succession. Some ofthe varieties which have proved the most successful are now grown quite extensivelythroughout the Province, and are amongst the most highly prized grains under generalcultivation. The leading varieties will be referred to when we are considering the resultsof the various experiments in the results to follow. 120

An exhibit from the Experimental departmentwas placed in the Agricultural Hall at the Industrial Fair, Toronto, in the autumn ofthe present year, The chief objects of this exhibit were (1) To show in a general waythe extent of our experimental work with varieties of grains at the Ontario AgriculturalCollege ; (2) To draw particular attention to the varieties which have given the bestresults ; and (3) To illustrate the results from sowing seeds of different selections. Thefollowing quotations with reference to this exhibit are taken from two of our Agriculturalpapers: Among the most interesting exhibits at the Fair were those of the Ontario Agri-cultural College. The exhibit in the Agricultural building was in charge of Mr. Zavitz,Experimentalist at the Farm, and consisted of an excellent display of grains in the straw,and arranged in the form of a circle at the south end of the building.
