ars, three varieties for five years, two varietiesfor three years, and one variety for two years. The barley was all sowed broadcast atthe rate of one hundred pounds of seed per acre on plots exactly 1-100 of an acre in size.Equal amounts were sowed on the different plots, and the seeding took place on April16th of the present year. The land was manured in the spring of 1897, and produced acrop of turnips the same year. The yield of barley per acre in 1898 was very large, the Mandscheuri producing ashigh as 77.6 bushels of grain per acre. The average yield of all the varieties was twenty-seven bushels per acre greater than in 1897, sixteen bushels per acre greater than in 1896,and eight bushels per acre less than in 1895. The weight of grain per measured bushelin 1898 was also high, the average being 53.3 pounds. This weight is over five poundsper measured bushel above the standard for barley, and is nearly four pounds per meas-ured bushel greater than the average weight for 1897. 122

(123) 62 Victoria. Sessional Papers (No. 18). A. 1899 The average yield per acre of the two-rowed varieties in 1898 was 65 bushels, and that of the six-rowed 67J bushels. This shows an average of 2; bushels per acre infavor of the six-rowed barleys. By examining the results of the two-rowed and six-rowedvarieties for the number of years for which they have been grown, as indicated in thelast column of the table, we find that, while some of the two-rowed varieties have givenvery good results, still, on the whole, the six rowed barleys have given the best generalsatisfaction. In weight per measured bushel for the past year, the two-rowed barleysweighed on the average If pounds more than the six-rowed barleys. * ou OT3 cS u <D a !- a vZ. Results for 1898.
