In 1810 Munro & Benedict opened a second store in the village, andabout the same time Captain Kimberly erected the first tavern in Am-hoy. Scarcely any other settlements had been made between JudgeGeddess at Fairmount and what is now Elbridge. At this period, aswell as before and afterward, the pioneers, while engaged in the hardwork of clearing land, found their popular amusement in a form of co-operation called bees, which all the settlers for miles around attended.They had chopping bees, logging bees, husking bees, raising bees,and other bees, and usually ended at night in dancingand frolic. Mem-orable indeed were these jolly times, for work and play were happilycombined. On February II, L811, the First Methodist Society in Camillus wasorganized, making the third in the old town, and probably the secondect a church edifice, as will presently appear.

THE TOWN OF CAMILLUS. 6G7 Excitement over the war with Great Britain extended into this town,as described in early chapters of this work, and a number of its citizensshared to a limited extent in the military operations of that period. In 1815 James R. Lawrence opened the first law office in Camillus.He received the appointment of postmaster at that village in 1824, andwas succeeded by Grove Lawrence, who had established himself in thepractice of law in 1821. On June 8, 1833, the latter was elected brig-adier-general of the 27th Brigade of Infantry. Among later lawyers inCamillus were Samuel Hammond, Daniel Pratt, and D. D. Hillis (seeChapter XXVI). David Bennett, a native of Ridgefield, Conn., born October 21, L786,arrived in this town in the winter of 1813 from Saratoga count), wherehe had married Hannah Crawford in 1809.
