In 1838 the preliminary steps were taken for building a public market.The old canal basin, before described, had for years been an intolerablenuisance, and the project was actively discussed of filling it up anderecting a market on the site. It is difficult now for us to understandhow the people of the village could have seen a prospect of success andprofit in the enterprise; but, like the inhabitants of most other similarvillages, they determined to try it. The plan contemplated a buildingwith market stalls on the lower part and a public hall above.
