Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bridge over the Somme, France, during World War I. Seven soldiers stand on a temporary bridge over the Somme. According to the photograph's original caption the bridge was built by the Royal Engineers. The bridge is made up of wooden planks and appears to be held up by a large central girder supported by wooden blocks. There is a rope handrail running the length of the bridge. The men are posing for the camera.

Positive scenes such as this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. One of the many temporary bridges made by the R.E.s over the Somme.']
