Summary
[edit]DescriptionOne of the large residences in the cave town atop the hill (30228815685).jpg | One of the large residences in the cave town, purposely taken with a long foreground to show the entire structure and also the solid rock it is sculpted on. Uplistsikhe is remarkable for the unique combination of various styles from rock-cut cultures of the region, most notably from Cappadocia in Turkey and the co-existence of pagan and Christian architecture. Built on the high rocky sandstone massif along the left bank of the Mtkvari River, the area was identified by archaeologists as one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia, containing various structures dating from its founding in the Late Bronze Age (around 1,000 BC) to the Late Middle Ages (13th century AD). Its natural sandstone rock was easy to work on, and has made it possible to create complex tenements and structures hewn out of rock. (Uplistsikhe, Georgia, Sept. 2016) |
