Summary
[edit]DescriptionOne Soldier on the Top of Avala.jpg |
English: The Monument to the Unknown Hero at Avala is a monumental mausoleum on top of Mount Avala in the southeast of Belgrade. The creator of this monument is Croatian and Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Meštrović. It was built in 1938.
During the retreat in 1915, one Serbian soldier was killed at the very top of Avala. The Germans buried him and wrote on the cross 'Ein unbekannter serbischer Soldat.' In 1921, the grave was "on the way to disappear", so in June, the representative of the National Assembly accepted the proposal to erect a "modest monument" in memory of all fallen unknown heroes.
