. The case is not so much given asa record of cure as of the effect of a months painlesstreatment. Plate xvii. shows the appliances ajBfixed andthe position induced. Case XTII. Sarah J. A—, aged 5, was brought to me at theCharing Cross Hospital, on the 14th of March, 1864,with a deformity of the right foot. When a little more than two years old she was put tobed one evening quite well; next morning, when takenup, her right leg was found to be paralysed, otherwiseshe seemed quite well, although perhaps a little languid.A medical man in the neighbourhood saw her, and aftersome weeks power was found to be returning. Soonafterwards it was observed that the foot was twistedinwards, so that she walked on its outer side, and thetoes turned in. As this deformity increased the childwas taken to the Orthopaedic Hospital, and there aninstrument was ordered, which appears from descriptionto have been a Scarpas shoe. TxiLIPES VARUS. 153 strument was adopted, consisting of an ordinary lace-upboot, into the sole of which two irons, one on the out-side, one on the inside, are fixed; these running upwardare hinged at the ankle-joint to two other rods, whichare continued to just below the knee, where they arefastened to the leg by straps; the instrument carriesalso a strap to go over the instep. After twenty months of fortnightly visits to thehospital, and the child getting no better, the attendanceceased, though the boot was continued. A little beforeMichaelmas, 1863, the child was admitted an in-patientat Guys, and she remained there nearly five months.The treatment consisted solely (according to statement)of her being put into another boot, which, instead ofhaving rods on both sides, bore a single one on theouter side, which was hinged in the heel. This instru-ment did not ajjpear productive of benefit, and thechild coming out at the latter end of February, fellalmost immediately under my care. 14th
