Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Spiders on Mars? Not exactly! In the polar regions of Mars, ice will sublimate (going directly from a solid to a gaseous state) that disturbs the terrain to expose darker subsurface material. This can also create what look like small channels that branch out, sometimes looking like spider legs, so we refer to it as “spider terrain” rather than “araneiform terrain.”

In any case, it looks spectacular!

Image cutout is less than 5 km (3 mi) across and the spacecraft altitude was 246 km (153 mi). For full observation details including images with scale bars, visit the source link.
