On the right the buildings on the quay show-indistinctly, and on the left the wide expanse of still waterextends to the horizon, where a passing steamboat leaves along smudge of smoke. Overhead the sky is heavily overcastwith clouds, the blue showing through in places, to find ananswering note in the mirror of the depths below. Signed on the lower right, P. J. No. 22 JEAN BAPTISTE CAM ILL E COROT FBBNCH j * /? LE PAT RE—EVENING ON THE LAKE On the lower slope of a rough hillside, overgrow n withlong coarse grass and rising in the distance into a precipitousmass of rock, stand two tine trees, the principal feature ofthe composition. Their trunks grow smooth and erect, andtheir branches spread symmetrically across the picture, un-harmed by the fierce storms of winter. The lighter twigs, with their feathery burden of leaves, are silhouetted gracefullyagainst the sky, the foliage showing every gradation of tone, from the delicate green of the tender young shoot to the yel-lower tinge of the withered leaf. In the distance are the whitewalls and red roofs of a large rambling structure, built on thehillside, and at the foot of the trees are a man and a womantalking, the latter bearing a heavy staff in her hand. Iponthe summit of a low knoll stands a man beside a solitarysheep, gazing out over the surface of a large body of water, which extends, gray
