В библиотеках Тимбукту хранилось множество важных рукописей, выполненных в различных стилях арабского письма, которые записывались и переписывались книжниками и учеными Тимбукту. Рукописи являются самым известным и наиболее ценным вкладом города в исламскую и мировую цивилизацию.
