l it nothing lessthan East Africas due to mention that after each of myexpeditions therein (despite the accidental ill-luck of get-ting malarial fever) I have personally felt reinvigoratedand about five years younger! Permanent residencethere may, of course, be cpiite a different matter. On reaching my destination at Eburu that evening,after seven hours railway journey, it was both surprisingand grateful to notice the evident pleasure shown byour retinue of savages at my recovery, though I was,so far, almost a total stranger to them all. Theycrowded round the carriage, and on seeing that I had 8 ON SAFARI difficulty in descending—there are no platforms in thewilds—lifted me down and almost carried me to ourcamp, which was pitched on a rugged hillside above.Next morning a smiling Swahili presented me with astout staflof Mpiqui wood that I have since carried overthousands of miles in Africa, and which I still use athome. This slight tribute to the savage Swahili shallnot be omitted.

Every passenger on theUganda railway must realise its existence when, shortlyafter passing Limoru (400 miles from the coast), thetrain suddenly dips away beneath him, plunging down-wards in what appears a mad descent through tropicalforest, to a station yclept Escarpment. Within a mile or two he has been hurled into anabyss, dropping from 7,500 ft. elevation at Limoruto 5,800 ft. on the Enderit River.
