erism of the urethra of the male.—The in-strument used for this operation is a cylindrical tube made ofsilver, or of gum elastic; it should be about nine inches longand of a diameter suited to that of the urethra, which of coursevaries in size according to the age of the individual and tocertain morbid conditions of the canal; the extremity whichenters the bladder should be conical in shape, closed at itspoint, but perforated just above the hitter with two or morewell-opened eyes ; a moderate degree of curvature should alsobe given to this part of the catheter, though a perfectly straightinstrument may be passed through a healthy urethra; theother extremity of the tube is open, and generally has a smallring attaclied to each side of it, for the purpose of affordingmeans of confining the instrument in the bladder, if occasionre(piire, (fig. 162.)
