English: “Hi, golly! Dat do de business,” laughed Cuff as the charge of spikes struck the occupants of the foremost boat. Several were knocked into the water, their dead bodies floating away and leaving a crimson track upon the waves, and as for the rest, they seemed suddenly paralyzed with fear at the unusual sound.
Three rifles, in the hands of Scott and the two young men, spoke at the same time, and two of the Madagascarans fell into the water, shot through the heart. The others had been blazing away with the utmost vigor, but although they picked off their men rapidly, the dusky demons were fairly swarming toward the ship upon all sides, and its capture seemed certain. There's also a charming scene in which a teenaged cabin boy beats a cat to death against the mast of a ship. Fun stuff. Builds character. Provides moral guidance to impressionable young minds.
