Retired U.S. Army Capt. Dennis Deal , center, and retired Col. John Herron, left, attend a remembrance service for U.S. Army Spc. 5 Calvin Bouknight in Section 38 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., May 20, 2024. Deal was the platoon leader, Herron the company commander, and Bouknight the medic for the 7th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division. On Nov. 14, 1965, their unit was involved in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley, the first major U.S. offensive of the Vietnam War. During the battle, Calvin was assigned to stay near Deal and attend to the wounded. While saving the lives of four other soldiers, he was shot and killed. These action lead to him being posthumously awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Until recently, Bouknight’s Silver Star designation was not listed on his original headstone at ANC. Through the joint efforts of John McCaskill and ANC senior leadership, this error was remedied. The remembrance service was to commemorate Bouknight’s updated headstone and included a wreath-laying at Bouknight’s headstone by his family.
