On June 19, 2023, as part of a Juneteenth commemoration at St. Paul's, Park Ranger Michael Callahan (in the uniform of a Civil War officer) explains the story of private in a Black regiment in the Union Army, who was stationed in Texas in June 1865, at the time of the Juneteenth proclamation, announcing the end of slavery in the state. The soldier, Private John Bird of the, was born enslaved in Virginia, gained his freedom during the Civil War, and after his service in the army, moved to Mt. Vernon, passing away in 1935, followed by burial at St. Paul's.
