Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Omagh Courthouse - Christmas day, noon 2005. This splendid building dominates Omagh because of its prominent position within the town. It is located at the top of high street and is well worth a visit. As with the majority of courthouses scattered throughout Northern Ireland, this courthouse is a listed building. Built on the site of the old gaol in 1820, it purportedly cost £17,000. The Architect responsible was a man named John Hargrave. The building's architecture is magnificent and classical. And, of course, there is the usual story that it has its own (friendly) ghost. The Boer War Memorial was located about the position of the Christmas tree until 1969, when it was re-positioned along Drumgagh Avenue. see 65950 The Mullan Drinking fountain was located between the memorial and the footpath in the middle of the road . It was put there for visitors to quench their thirst if they didn't wish to enter one of the many public houses in the town at that time. It was removed in 1929 as it was deemed a hassard to traffic. A similar ornate fountain still exists today in the village of Caledon beside the Orange Hall. 619645
