It was photographed by the DLR stereo camera HRSC in April 2023 during the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere of Mars. The north-south extent (from left) is around 250 kilometers, the east-west extent in the center of the image is around 100 kilometers. This covers an area slightly larger than that of the federal state of Hesse. The extensive dune field in the left half of the picture is more than 150 kilometers long and extends further south (left). Such dune fields around the north pole of Mars have some similarities to so-called ergs, the large sand deserts on Earth, such as those found in the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula. At 470,000 square kilometers, the dune fields of the sandy Olympia Undae desert near Mars' north pole are comparable in size to the Rub Al-Chali in Saudi Arabia.
