ould be only one explanation of this.The attack on the island had begun from the air, and theflashes were those of the first shots of the aerial-bombardment. What had really happened was this. A fleet of fifty submarine warships, under the command ofMichael Lossenski, the eldest son of Orloff Lossenski, whowas now Olga Eoraanoffs chief adviser in the conduct of thewar that she had commenced with the Aerians, had reachedthe northern coast of Kergiielen Island about four oclock inthe morning in order to co-operate with an aerial squadronof fifteen vessels led by the Revenge, under the command,nominally, of Lossenskis second son Boris, but really of Olgaherself. As Alexis had surmised, the twelve vessels destroyed by theNarwhal were scouts sent out to, if possible, feel their way tothe entrance of Christmas Harbour, which was known to bethe headquarters of the station.
