Description Olfert Dapper's rendering of the Pyramids in Egypt, "Egiptische Piramiden." The illustration was part of his work Description of Africa. Dapper was an Amsterdam Physician who never actually visited Africa, but pieced together his account from sources that were available to him. The book was published originally in Dutch at Amsterdam (1668) by Jacob van Meurs, as Naukeurige beschrijvinge der Afrikaensche gewesten van Egypten, Barbaryen, Libyen, Biledulgerid, Negroslant, Guinea, Ethiopiën, Abyssinie. It was then quickly translated into German (1670) as Umbständliche und eigentliche Beschreibung von Africa und denen darzu gehörigen Königreichen und Landschaften, from which this image was taken.
