That was how this Booth of the Boston pulpit began his preachingcareer that made the Boston Seamens Bethel world-famous and thatbrought to its congregations nany famous persons, among themCharles Dickens, Jenny Lind, and Walt Whitman. Here the manwho had been a sailor himself, and knew the temptations and hard-ships of the life, fought the battles of sailors the world over. Young Taylors preaching career did not begin immediately afterhe visited Park Street Church. At that time he could not even read,so he decided to go back to the sea, this time sailing in the BlackHawk, a privateer. He was captured by a British man-of-war,taken to Melville Island and from there to Dartmoor prison, wherehe was confined for some time.
