Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld plough strips in Littondale - geograph.org.uk - 1185761.jpg |
English: Old plough strips in Littondale. The peasant farmers of Hawkswick would have had very little land available on which to grow crops in centuries past, but down dale from the village the south west facing slopes below Knipe Scar had a gentle enough angle to allow ox drawn ploughs to be used. These plough strips [or lynchets] are most likely of medieval date and have left a distinctive 'stepped' landscape on the daleside. |
