| Description |
old man pricklypear, Opuntia polyacantha var. erinacea, California, White Mountains, Black Mountain, Owens Valley drainage, elevation 2423 m (7950 ft). This common pricklypear cactus is centered in the Mojave Desert of the southwest United States, and extends shortly into adjacent regions to the north, east, and south. In the western part of its range, the flowers are almost exclusively yellow (aging peach, as shown here). Farther east, bright magenta flowers become more frequent, with both often occurring on the same plant in central Nevada, and becoming mostly magenta beyond there. One of the more cold-tolerant cacti, old man pricklypear has been found as high as 10,500 feet (3200 meters) here in the White Mountains, on open slopes exposed to bitterly cold winter gales. |
