Description

The object shown here is an old open-flame lantern used by early cave guides in western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, the longest cave on Earth. As of fall 2017, 412 miles worth of passages have been explored and mapped.

Mammoth Cave has a relative abundance of archaeological and historical artifacts. American Indians entered the cave up to 12 miles from the Historic Entrance to engage in gypsum "mining" and chert/flint "mining". Many Indian artifacts have been removed over the last 200 years. Some artifact-rich areas are still close to pristine.

Modern trash also occurs in the cave. The American government has arbitrarily decreed that any >50 year old trash in Mammoth Cave is an "artifact" and should be left in place. This includes matchbooks, matchboxes, broken wine bottles, old chicken bones from lunches, etc. Sheesh.
