| Description |
English: Old bridge, Portrush harbour. See also 306669. The branch line from Coleraine to Portrush opened in 1855. The line was extended to Portrush harbour in 1866. Portrush was, and continued to be, a busy harbour until the late 1960's when most ships became too big to enter. The line to the harbour closed in 1949 but the old bridge to the quay remained, albeit in a precarious state. The harbour was privately owned and became uneconomic when the number of ships declined. It was eventually sold to the council for (as I recall) £1. This photo of the old railway bridge was taken in 1970 when the harbour was still owned by the Portrush Harbour Company. |
