Here, for several years, lived Dr.Atterbury, afterwards Bishop of Rochester, whosecommittal to the Tower on suspicion of being con-cerned in a plot in favour of the Pretender was oneof the principal events at the commencement of thelast century. It was whilst living here that Dr.Atterbury became acquainted with Dean Swift, who,in 1711, took up his residence opposite the doctorshouse.
